NEW HAVEN HOLDS OFF GOLDEN KNIGHTS

ALBANY-New Haven held off The College of Saint Rose down the stretch to chalk up an 85-80 Northeast-10 Conference victory at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium this evening. The game featured nine ties and eight lead changes throughout the second half, but the Chargers (7-2/3-2 NE-10) drained a pair of key 3-pointers and went 6-for-6 from the foul line in the final 19 seconds to seal the win.

Senior forward Mariah Lesure scored a season-high 21 points and pulled down seven rebounds, while senior guard Jamie Hutcheson finished with 15 points, seven boards and five assists to lead a balanced Golden Knights (3-6/1-5 NE-10) effort.

Also, senior guard Gabie Polce and junior guard #Keyontae Williams# wound up with 14 and 13 points respectively, while junior guard Tyler Hansen added 10.

For New Haven, senior guard Elizabeth Cruso scored all 17 of her points in the second half, while senior forward Bria Moore went 5-for-7 from the floor to toss in 17 herself. Also, senior guard Aquillin Hayes finished with 15 and 12 rebounds, and junior guard Lauren Hebert contributed 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Saint Rose faced its biggest deficit of the second half, 73-66, with 4:08 to go when Lesure finished inside and Polce knocked down a trey off a Hansen steal to make it a two point, 73-71, ballgame with 2:32 left. The two aforementioned New Haven 3-pointers sandwiched around a layup by sophomore forward Staci Barrett pushed the Chargers advantage back to six, 79-73, with 44 ticks remaining.

The two squads then traded a pair of free throws, before Hansen knocked down a trey to again make it a one possession affair, 81-78, with 17 seconds to go. However, New Haven converted all of six of its ensuing free throws to register its fourth victory in its last five outings.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights will head to the American International Tournament this weekend to face NYIT on Saturday and Post University on Sunday. Both games will tip-off at 3:30 pm from Henry A. Butova Gymnasium in Springfield.
