SAINT ROSE DEFEATS MERCY TO MOVE ON TO NATIONAL QUARTERFINALS

WEST CHESTER, PA–The College of Saint Rose punched its ticket to a sixth NCAA Tournament National Quarterfinal within the past seven years behind today's 3-0 East Region Final victory versus 17th-ranked Mercy on the campus of West Chester University.

The Golden Knights (20-1-2), ranked sixth in the most recent NSCAA/Continental Tire Poll, will now meet the host Golden Rams (17-2-2) on Sunday at noon. West Chester advanced with today's 1-0 Atlantic Region Final win against visiting West Virginia Wesleyan.

Senior back Jourdan Thompson wrapped a pair of strikes around an own goal to lead Saint Rose to its seventh consecutive 20-win season on a 32 degree, blustery afternoon.

Thompson knocked home a loose ball following a corner kick by junior forward Jennifer Busk with less than five minutes remaining until halftime for what held up as the game-winner. The Golden Knights got an insurance marker with 70:59 gone by when a miscommunication between a Mercy (17-2-1) defender and junior keeper Nicole Augustine led to the own goal. Thompson then touched home a feed from freshman forward Morgan Burchhardt four minutes later to put the Golden Knights in the catbird seat.

Augustine came up with five saves for the Mavericks who set a school record with their 17 victories this autumn. Meanwhile, sophomore Ashley Homer made a stop in each period as Saint Rose recorded its 15th shutout of the year.

The contest was fairly evenly played throughout the opening 45 minutes, but the Golden Knights set an aggressive tone at the onset of the second period and subsequently dictated the pace that yielded a 13-3 shot advantage throughout the half.

Saint Rose also had a few superlative chances go for naught as senior forward Carmelina Puopolo rattled the near left post with 31:12 elapsed and also struck the right post with 82:13 gone by.
