SAINT ROSE ADVANCES WITH OVERTIME WIN VERSUS LIU POST

ALBANY–Senior forward Carmelina Puopolo scored both goals including the game-winner with less than a minute remaining in the first overtime session to lift The College of Saint Rose to a 2-1 NCAA Tournament second-round win versus 15th-ranked LIU Post today at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.

The Golden Knights (19-1-2) will now meet Mercy in the East Regional Final (round of 16) this Friday, November 21, at West Chester University (PA). Sixth-ranked Saint Rose upended the Mavericks 2-1 in overtime back in September. Friday will mark their 10th regional final appearance.

The Pioneers (15-3-1) took an early lead when junior forward Susanne Vistnes created space at the top of the area before delivering a shot that sailed into the lower right corner with 8:24 gone by.

However, Puopolo leveled it with just 37 seconds left until intermission when she got position at the LIU Post doorstep and subsequently redirected a free kick off the foot of junior midfielder Jennifer Busk.

Saint Rose then kept up the pressure in the second half that yielded a 6-2 shot advantage and a 7-2 corner kick differential, but could not finish until Puopolo drove home a pass from junior midfielder Michaela Phillips for her 20th strike of the season.

The Pioneers developed a great chance to regain the lead with 21 minutes remaining in regulation when senior back Lauren Bellone dribbled in alone, but Saint Rose sophomore keeper Ashley Homer came well off her line to make her lone save of the game stand out.

At the other end, sophomore Hreffie Agnarsdottire turned aside seven shots-on-target to keep the Pioneers in the match.
