TOP-RANKED SAINT ROSE UPENDS NE-10 RIVAL YELLOW JACKETS 1-0

ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose got its lone goal from an unlikely source and played its prototypical solid defense while dictating pace en route to tonight's 1-0 victory against Northeast-10 Conference rival American International at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The game was a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament East Regional Final that the host Yellow Jackets won 2-0 to hand the Golden Knights their lone setback of the season.

This evening belonged to Saint Rose though. The Golden Knights (10-0-1/6-0-1 NE-10), who are the nation's top-ranked team in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Poll for the fourth consecutive week, manufactured a 14-3 shot advantage and generated nine corner kicks, eight in the first half, while yielding only one. In the process, they registered their ninth clean sheet this autumn.

Junior back Nicole Shively scored the game's lone goal when she intercepted an American International (2-7-1/2-5-1 NE-10) attempted clear and ripped a shot from 35-yards out under the crossbar with 18:20 gone by for her second career goal. Meanwhile, sophomore keeper Ashley Homer was called upon to make her lone save in the opening three minutes. Senior Sam Tabek had to turn aside a pair of shots in each half at the other end.

Saint Rose nearly put the game out of reach in the first period when it outshot the Yellow Jackets 8-2. Senior forward Carmelina Puopolo hit the far post off a corner kick from the right flag two minutes prior to Shively's strike. Puopolo then rolled a ball from the left flank towards the far post that Tabek just deflected off the end line at the 19:45 mark. Freshman forward Morgan Burchhardt also got in on the action by forcing Tabek to make a diving save to her right with 22:06 gone by.

The second half featured fewer scoring opportunities as the Golden Knights defense of Shively, senior backs La'Quilla Upton and Jourdan Thompson, and junior central midfielder Michaela Phillips prevented American International from developing any real scoring threats.

Looking ahead, both teams have 2:00 pm conference road matches set for Saturday. The Golden Knights will travel to Manchester, NH to meet Saint Anselm, while the Yellow Jackets will head to North Andover, MA to face Merrimack.
