ALBANY, N.Y. – Despite a season-high of 36 digs from senior libero Katy Daniels, and a double-double from sophomore outside hitter Maryellen Devic, The College of Saint Rose volleyball team suffered a 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 21-25, 22-25) loss to Northeast-10 Conference foe Southern New Hampshire Friday evening in Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
The win for the Penmen allowed them to improve to 15-9 overall, 7-5 in the NE-10, and snap an undefeated home streak for the Golden Knights (15-7, 7-4 NE-10).
Devic knocked down 17 kills and dug up 10 attacks for her sixth double-double of the season. Junior right side Carissa Dube followed Devic in the attack with 13 kills of her own, and also put up five blocks. Setters Tori Daniels and Erica Ziskin combined for 46 assists, and sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Gundrum racked up eight blocks to lead from the middle.
Saint Rose started out strong as it came away with a 25-15 win in the first set that included a game-high 6-0 run, and followed with a 4-0 spurt.
The script changed quickly after that. In set two, the Golden Knights battled back twice to tie the game at 11-11 and 18-all, and jumped ahead for a 23-22 lead, but an attack error from junior middle hitter Kelsey Lace and a service ace from SNHU's junior setter Catherine Cotton sealed the win for the Penmen.
SNHU kept its momentum going in the third despite ties once again at the 11-all and 18-18 marks. The Golden Knights were unable to go ahead by more than one point, and gave up a 5-0 run to the Penmen late in the set, resulting in a 25-21 win for SNHU.
Set four was a constant battle for both teams with 10 ties before the final at 15-15. The Golden Knights chipped away at the board, and picked up three points in a row to trail by one at 22-21. The Penmen followed the run by capitalizing on a pair of attack errors and an ace from Cotton to grab the 25-22 victory, and the overall one.
Saint Rose wraps up its regular season home slate on Saturday with a 1:00 pm meeting with league foe Franklin Pierce. Prior to the match, the Golden Knights will recognize seniors Daniels (Tori), Daniels (Katy) and setter Ariana Wilson for their hard work and dedication to the program.
