MEDERO'S FIRST CAREER STRIKE PROVIDES DIFFERENCE FOR SAINT ROSE

ALBANY–Junior midfielder Joani Medero picked an opportune moment for her first career goal. Medero made her initial appearance tonight at the start of the second overtime session and then delivered the game-winner four minutes later with a 35-yard drive into the top right corner that lifted The College of Saint Rose to a 2-1 win against visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern Connecticut State.

The Golden Knights (13-1-1/9-1-1 NE-10), who earlier today jumped two spots to #3 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Weekly Poll, improved to 7-0-1 at home while the Owls (9-4-1/8-3-1 NE-10) had their nine match unbeaten streak snapped.

Saint Rose controlled play for the majority of the first half and senior forward Carmelina Puopolo made the effort pay dividends with 37:37 elapsed. Puopolo struck for her league-leading 14th goal of the year when she touched home a cross off the right sideline from junior midfielder Silvana Giovannone.

In the second half, the Owls were able to gain some momentum that afforded them a 6-3 shot advantage during that span. Regardless, the contest appeared destined to end in regulation until sophomore forward Caroline Staudle knocked in a loose ball following a corner kick to level the match 1-1 with just less than five minutes remaining.

The Golden Knights then regained their composure and out-shot Southern Connecticut State 5-0 in overtime en route to the win.

Sophomore keeper Ashley Homer finished with three saves for Saint Rose, while fellow sophomore Erica Ridella made all five of her saves before halftime for the Owls.

Looking ahead, both teams have conference road dates later this week. The Golden Knights have a 12:30 pm meeting Saturday at Stonehill in Easton, MA; while Southern Connecticut State has a 3:30 pm date Friday at Bentley in Waltham, MA.
