GOLDEN KNIGHTS SCORE THREE TIMES IN SECOND HALF TO UPEND MERRIMACK

ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose scored three times in the second period to snap a 1-1 halftime tie on the way to a 4-1 victory versus Northeast-10 Conference rival Merrimack today at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. Four different players scored for the fifth-ranked Golden Knights (12-1-1/8-1-1 NE-10) who improved to 6-0-1 at home this year.

Junior midfielders Michaela Phillips and Silvana Giovannone; and senior forwards Carmelina Puopolo and Meeghan Arno accounted for the four strikes.

Senior back Jourdan Thompson assisted on Philips' goal, while sophomore keeper Ashley Homer made all three of her saves in the second half to keep the Warriors (6-6-2/2-6-2 NE-10) scoreless throughout the final 45 minutes.

The match was played fairly evenly during the first stanza, but Saint Rose controlled the pace in the second half that led to a 12-5 shot advantage throughout that stretch.

Senior Marissa Maiolo scored Merrimack's goal when she knocked in a loose ball with 26:36 elapsed that leveled it 1-1, less than two minutes after Phillips drove home a rebound off of a Thompson drive.

In the second half, Puopolo made a dash down the right flank and cut to the middle before firing home a shot that skimmed on the wet surface and into the back of the net at the 62:10 mark. Eight minutes after that, Giovannone collected a loose ball from some 35-yards out on the left side and let go a volley that sailed into the top-right corner. Arno then closed out the scoring with 79:29 gone by when she collected a pass in the area, turned her defender and found the lower-right corner.

Looking ahead, both teams are back on the pitch this Tuesday. The Golden Knights will host Southern Connecticut State at 5:30 pm, while the Warriors will head to Colchester, VT to take on Saint Michael's at 3:00 pm.
