DEFENSE LEADS SAINT ROSE TO WIN VERSUS SAINT ANSELM

The Golden Knights came up with 12 blocks to help pick up a 3-0 win versus Saint Anselm tonight.

ALBANY-Useful defense at the net helped The College of Saint Rose pick up a close 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 25-19) Northeast-10 Conference win versus Saint Anselm earlier this evening at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
 
Senior middle hitter Alex Gagliano assisted on seven of the teams 12 blocks on the night while also adding seven kills. Freshman middle hitter Maryellen Devic swung for a team-high nine kills along with four blocks and two service aces for the Golden Knights (14-3/6-2 NE-10). Junior libero Katy Daniels added 16 digs.
 
Freshman right side hitter Brennah Gladwill and senior outside hitter Kyla Gustavon each had a match-high 10 kills for the Hawks (7-15/2-7 NE-10). Junior setter Natalie Steinwart steered the offense with 28 assists.
 
Playing down most of the first set, Saint Rose rallied to score four of the game's last five points for the victory. Junior setter Tori Daniels passed out seven assists while Gagliano was a part of four of the team's six blocks. Also, Gagliano was one of five individuals to record two kills in the set for the Golden Knights.
 
Facing a 24-21 deficit in the second set, the Golden Knights again had to rally. A 5-0 run capped off the comeback victory to go up 2-0 in the match. Devic posted six kills on a .545 hitting percentage while Katy Daniels notched six digs. Freshman setter Erica Ziskin helped spark the late rally with three assists, a kill, and a service ace.
 
A similar run of 5-0 for Saint Rose propelled the group to the third set win that capped off the sweep. Saint Anselm was forced into 10 attacking errors as well as four service errors.
 
Both teams have league matches tomorrow at 1:00 pm. Saint Rose hosts Saint Michael's, a match that can be seen live on www.gogoldenknights.tv. Meanwhile, Saint Anselm travels to Syracuse to face Le Moyne.
