SAINT ROSE UNABLE TO GET PAST LIU POST IN FIVE SETS

Freshman outside hitter Kelsey Lace tallied 13 kills and 13 digs in today's non-conference setback.at LIU-Post.
Box Score BROOKVILLE, NY – In a tight non-conference match, The College of Saint Rose was just narrowly defeated at Long Island University Post Campus earlier today in five sets, 3-2 (25-15, 19-25, 25-12, 16-25, 12-15), inside the Pratt Recreation Center.

Saint Rose (8-5) looked to attack early and often in the first set, creating an advantage as large as 15 points at 23-8.  The Pioneers (10-9) found some room to fight back, cutting into the lead with a quick 7-1 spurt.  However, a kill by senior middle hitter Alex Gagliano concluded the set, giving the Golden Knights an early 1-0 lead.  Freshman outside hitter Kelsey Lace tallied a set-high four kills on a .667 hitting percentage.

Nine attacking errors on the part of Saint Rose created partially by five LIU Post blocks helped give the Pioneers the victory in the second set, evening the match at one win a piece.  Senior middle blocker Lisa Delfs hit .500 in the game to control three attacks.  The Pioneers only had four attacking errors compared to the Golden Knights' nine to help the effort.

Looking to not fall behind in the match, Saint Rose generated an 8-0 lead early in the third set that proved to be too large a hole for the Pioneers to come back from.  After LIU Post cut into the lead at 16-10, the Golden Knights closed out the set victory with a 9-2 run.  Sophomore setter Ariana Wilson helped create that early 8-0 lead with four service aces in the run.

LIU Post forced a decisive fifth set after dominating much of the fourth set.  Delfs and sophomore middle block Makamae Namahoe led with three kills apiece, spearing a Pioneer attack that hit .409 during the game. Sophomore libero Katy Daniels kept the Golden Knights involved during the set, accounting for three service aces in the set.

After an early 5-1 lead for Saint Rose in the fifth set, a timeout called by LIU Post seemed to have switched the momentum as the Pioneer captured the lead at 9-8 and did not relinquish the advantage to go on for the set and match victory.  Delfs one again led the attack for three kills and a hitting percentage of .750.

Hitting an impressive .421, Delfs' 10 kills was a big lift to the Pioneer attack.  Delf's also had a fine match on the defensive side of the ball, tallying one solo block and five block assists.  Sophomore setter Lulu Centro had a solid match behind 15 assists and 10 digs.  Namahoe had a team-high 16 digs to go with 8 kills.

For the Golden Knights, Lace continued her stellar play this season, going for 13 kills and 13 digs.  Wilson ended her afternoon with match-highs in both assists, 24, and service aces, 7.  Daniels controlled the back line for a match-high 19 digs.

Saint Rose returns home this Tuesday, hosting Le Moyne for a 7:00 pm match inside Nolan Gymnasium.  This match will be the latest matchup between the two schools in the “Upstate Challenge” year-long series.  Meanwhile, LIU Post remains home for a match on Thursday.  First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm against Queens.
