GOLDEN KNIGHTS DROP THRILLER TO SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT

Sophomore libero Katy Daniels recorded the most digs by a Golden Knight since 2009 this evening.
Box Score ALBANY, NY – The College of Saint Rose women's volleyball team dropped a thrilling five-set (19-25, 30-28, 16-25, 25-16, 17-19) match early this evening to Northeast-10 Conference opponent Southern Connecticut State University.

The makings of an exciting night started in the first set as neither team gave away any momentum.  Southern Connecticut (13-1/2-0 NE-10) grabbed the first sizeable advantage, taking an 16-11 lead midway through the opening set, led by junior outside hitter Lauren McVey and her six kills in the game.  Up 24-19 towards the end of the set, McVey finalized the opening win for the Owls with a service ace.

The highest dramatics came during a thrilling second set that needed more than just one extra point to decide the outcome.  With each side at 24 points, the battle for the final two points carried on for another 10 plays before Saint Rose (7-4/0-1 NE-10) prevailed on an attacking error.  Freshman outside hitter Kelsey Lace powered the Golden Knight offense with eight kills during the set while sophomore setter Ariana Wilson dished out 11 assists.

McVey and junior outside hitter Sarah Beres shared attacking duties for the Owls during a convincing third set victory, each tallying four kills.  Senior setter Kimberly Lachowicz assisted on all 12 kills in the set.

Looking to force a fifth and deciding set, Saint Rose matched the score of the Owls from the previous game.  Junior middle hitter Alex Gagliano was the focal point this time for the offense, attacking with a .455 hitting percentage that gave her six kills in the set.  Sophomore libero Katy Daniels controlled the back line with seven digs.

Another game where neither team was looking to give an inch, the fifth set was forced into extra points.  The final six of seven plays went back and forth before Southern Connecticut manufactured two kills off of Lachowicz's assists.

McVey ended the night with 20 kills on a .306 hitting percentage to lead the Owls.  She also combined her offense with 13 digs and four service aces.  Lachowicz was the offense's general behind 56 assists to go with five digs and two service aces.

Lace controlled the match-high of 23 kills for Saint Rose to go with 12 digs.  The kills were the most by a Golden Knight since former All-American Stephanie Brink recorded 24 in a 3-2 win over Union on October 24, 2006.  Futhermore, Daniel's final 33 digs were the most in school annals since former libero Mary German had 44 in a 3-2 win on September 12, 2009 versus Caldwell at the East Stroudsburg Tournament.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose goes on the road to Springfield, Massachusetts to continue NE-10 play at American International on Tuesday.  First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm.  Meanwhile, Southern Connecticut takes part in a tri-match at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.  The Owls face Caldwell at 1:00 pm and then meet the host Devils at 3:00 pm.
