Box Score

NEW HAVEN, CT – The College of Saint Rose, the fifth seed, was upended 3-0 (25-11, 25-23, 25-21) by host and fourth seed Southern Connecticut State earlier tonight in a Northeast-10 Championship quarterfinal match that denied the Golden Knights a second straight run to the conference championship finals.

Freshman outside hitter Carissa Dube had the team-high of seven kills to pace the Saint Rose (17-10) offense.  Dube also added four blocks to go along with four from sophomore middle hitter Emily Felter.  Sophomore libero Katy Daniels and her sister, sophomore setter Tori Daniels, each led the team with 11 digs.

Freshman outside hitter Kelly Gunneson spearheaded the Owl (24-10) attack by scoring a game-high 11 kills.  Junior outside hitter Lauren McVey notched a “double-double” with 10 kills and 11 digs, while senior setter Kimberly Lachowicz passed out 34 assists on 38 kills.

After taking an early 9-8 advantage, the Owls rattled off a 16-2 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match.   A closer game ensued in the second set as Southern Connecticut State built a 23-18 cushion. However, the Golden Knights scored five unanswered points to tie the game at 23-23. The Owls then came up with a kill, which coupled a Saint Rose error, put Southern Connecticut State in control 2-0.

Looking to start a comeback, Saint Rose built a 9-2 advantage in the third set as junior middle hitter Alex Gagliano sparked the stretch behind two kills and a pair of blocks. The Owls had other plans though and tied it 17-17. They then took the lead for good at 18-17 while closing out the match on a 14-6 run.

Saint Rose now awaits its fate regarding an NCAA Tournament at-large bid. The field will be announced this upcoming weekend.  Meanwhile, the Owls will face crosstown rival New Haven in an NE-10 semifinal on Friday at 5:00 pm.  The top seed Chargers advanced earlier this evening with a five set win versus Stonehill.
