The Plot: The College of Saint Rose travels to Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, CT for a
Northeast-10 Championship quarterfinal match this evening.
Last Meeting (9/20/12): In one of the more thrilling matches of the season, the Owls managed a five-set victory on the road to defeat the Golden Knights 3-2. Junior outside hitters Lauren McVey and Sarah Beres controlled 20 and 18 kills respectively while senior setter Kimberly Lachowicz passed out 56 assists. Freshman outside hitter Kelsey Lace's 23 kills were the most by a Golden Knight since former All-American Stephanie Brink recorded 24 in a 3-2 win over Union on October 24, 2006. Futhermore, sophomore libero Katy Daniel's 33 digs were the most in school annals since former libero Mary German had 44 in a 3-2 win on September 12, 2009 versus Caldwell at the East Stroudsburg Tournament.
Scouting Saint Rose (17-9): The Golden Knights enter the postseason as the fifth seed in the conference championships, winning eight of their last nine matches. Lace finished seventh in the NE-10 kills per-set column in the regular, leading the team behind a 3.14 average. Meanwhile, junior middle hitter Alex Gagliano is 15th in the nation and second in the conference with a .380 hitting percentage to account for her 2.67 kills per-set. She also finished fourth in the league in blocks per-set at 1.06. Katy Daniels controlled 4.81 digs per-set from her libero position, the third best average in the NE-10. Saint Rose as a team finished first in service aces, averaging 2.08 per-set. Sophomore setter Ariana Wilson came up with 44 aces during the season. Saint Rose is looking to make a similar run to the one it made in the 2011 postseason, advancing to the NE-10 Championship final match as the number four seed before falling to Adelphi.
Scouting Southern Connecticut State (23-10): The Owls concluded the conference portion of their schedule last Tuesday with a 3-0 loss at home against Adelphi. The team then took part in a tri-match at NYIT on Saturday, where Southern Connecticut came away 1-1, defeating Mercy 3-0 and then losing to the host Bears 3-0. McVey and Beres both finished in the top 10 of the NE-10 kill leaders for the regular season. McVey was slotted sixth at 3.15 per-set, while Beres' 3.12 average was good enough for ninth. The Owls finished first in the league at 17.53 digs per-set, led by a 4.62 average for senior libero Vanessa Sullivan. Sullivan's dig average ranked her fourth in the conference.
Up Next: The winner of this match will take on the winner of the quarterfinal match between the number one seed New Haven and the eighth seed Stonehill in the semifinal round. That matchup will take place Friday at 5:00 pm with the highest remaining seed hosting the final two rounds.
