ALBANY – A defensive showing of 13 total blocks afforded The College of Saint Rose its 10th
Northeast-10 Conference victory earlier today, defeating Merrimack by a final score of 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-20) to wrap up the regular season and head into the postseason.
Junior middle hitter
Alex Gagliano was at the forefront of defense at the net, coming away with 10 of the team's 13 blocks. She also added six kills for a balanced Golden Knight (17-9/10-5 NE-10) attack as freshmen outside hitters
Kelsey Lace and
Carissa Dube shared the team-high of eight kills. Senior outside hitter
Kayleigh Quinn also enjoyed a solid performance in her last career home match, posting seven kills and 13 digs.
The Warriors (10-20/2/-13 NE-10) were led by sophomore outside hitter Stephanie Sheehan as she controlled a match-high 12 kills. Senior setter Brianna Trabucco dished out 30 assists, also a match-high, to spread out the Merrimack attack.
Gagliano started the first set strong, notching four of her six kills in the game while also adding four blocks. After being knotted up at 8-8, Saint Rose went on a 11-3 run to create a comfortable margin. The Warriors managed to cut into the lead, however, were unable to overcome the Golden Knight push as a pair of sophomore setters hooked up for the game-clinching point when
Ariana Wilson connected for a kill on a pass from
Tori Daniels.
Sheehan put down seven kills in the second game that benefitted the Warriors an early advantage. However, Wilson picked up all of her service aces on three straight plays to bring the Golden Knights back. Lace then scored two of the final three points for Saint Rose on kills, one from Tori Daniels and then Wilson to put her team up 2-0.
The Saint Rose defense, both at the net and in the back, helped create a victory in the third set as the Golden Knights came up with 19 digs and four blocks to keep the Warrior attack at bay with a -.056 hitting percentage. Quinn rallied eight digs for a set-high as well as three kills on the offense. And as well as the defense played, Dube's offensive power come to the forefront as she connected on six of her eight kills in the final game.
Prior to the start of today's match, a brief ceremony was held to honor seniors
Kaitlyn Jasnica,
Laura Falkowitz, and Quinn.
