Box Score ALBANY, NY – After winning the first set, The College of Saint Rose could not control the attack of Le Moyne College as the Dolphins went on to win the next three sets for a 3-1 (25-16, 24-26, 21-25, 19-25)
Northeast-10 Conference victory earlier this evening. The match also gives Le Moyne a point in the year-long
“Upstate Challenge” rivalry series between the two institutions.
Junior middle hitter
Alex Gagliano and freshman outside hitter
Kelsey Lace shared the team-high of 13 kills for Saint Rose (8-6/1-2 NE-10). Gagliano controlled a hitting percentage of .462 while also adding two service aces. Sophomore setter
Ariana Wilson was the main distributor for the offense behind 24 assists. On the defensive back line, sophomore libero
Katy Daniels tallied a match-high 15 digs.
For the Dolphins (11-4/2-1 NE-10), senior middle hitter Morgan McDermott had a solid evening behind a match-high 17 kills on a .538 hitting percentage to go along with five block assists. Senior outside hitter Bethany Fabian notched a “double-double” with 10 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore setter Megan Maisonet brilliantly paced the Le Moyne offense with 44 assists.
Gagliano helped the Golden Knights get off on the right foot in the match, hitting .571 during the first set for four kills. After Le Moyne cut into the Saint Rose lead at 14-12, the Golden Knight quickly took advantage of errors on the part of the Dolphins to conclude the set on a 11-4 run. Saint Rose was also benefitted by three service aces in the game.
Four kills apiece on the part of Gagliano and Lace were matched and trumped by McDermott's five kills for the Dolphins and two of her teammates that accounted for another 11 in the second game. A strategic timeout on the part of Le Moyne with Saint Rose leading 20-17 late in the set allowed the Dolphins to gain composure that allowed them to quickly go on a game-winning 9-4 run.
McDermott really took over the third set, going for eight kills and a .778 hitting percentage to help Le Moyne gain a 2-1 advantage in the match. The Golden Knights continued to fight after finding themselves down by seven points on several occasions in the game. However, the combination of Le Moyne's attack and unforced errors led to a Dolphin victory.
Looking to conclude the match in the fourth set, the Dolphins went up by as many as 10 points after a kill by senior outside hitter Allison Hebel made the score 19-9. Back-to-back kills by Lace cut the Le Moyne advantage to four. In the end though, the deficit was too large to overcome as McDermott put down two kills in the final stages that helped give the Dolphins the set and match victory.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose makes its second straight weekend trip to Long Island this upcoming Saturday for a 2:00 pm conference date at Adelphi. Meanwhile, Le Moyne returns home Friday for a 7:00 pm NE-10 tilt with American International.
