ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose women's tennis team wrapped up a three match weekend against Northeast-10 Conference rival Merrimack on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 7-2 decision to the Warriors.
Two of the best matches of the day resulted in Saint Rose victories. In the first flight singles match, sophomore
Jennifer Crego battled freshman Kara Hole in a back-and-forth first set, which ended up in a 6-4 win for Crego. The sophomore built off the momentum from the first set and took the second set 6-1 to win the match.
Second singles also provided some high drama. After Merrimack junior Courtney Garvey took the first set 6-3, senior
Missy Leighton evened the match at a set apiece as she earned a 6-3 victory in the second set. The pair battled through a hard-fought third set where Leighton prevailed 10-6.
In doubles action, senior
Stephanie Belz and sophomore
Stephanie Wilhelm matched sophomores Erin McMahon and Katie Veasey shot-for-shot as the contest went to a tiebreaker. At 7-7, the Merrimack duo was able to rally off the two consecutive points for the 9-8 (9-7) win.
Prior to today's contest; Belz and Leighton, along with classmates
Valeria Bianchi and
Kimberly Schacher, were honored as part of "Senior Day" Festivities.
Up next, Saint Rose will return to action on Friday when the Golden Knights host Pace University at 4:00 pm. The match was rescheduled from March 29 when it was postponed due to inclement weather. Merrimack next takes on visiting Saint Michael's on Tuesday at 3:30 pm in North Andover, MA.
