ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose women's volleyball team made its long awaited return to the postseason in style as the host Golden Knights upended American International College 3-1 (25-15, 25-22, 19-25, 26-24) in the quarterfinal round of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium this evening. Saint Rose is now one victory shy of tying its longest winning streak of the year after chalking up its sixth straight triumph.
The Golden Knights (17-8), who are the fourth-seed, will now take on eighth-seed UMass Lowell (13-10) in a semifinal match at 7:30 pm Friday on the campus of Stonehill College. The River Hawks knocked off top-seed University of New Haven 3-1 tonight. Saint Rose took its own 3-1 decision over UMass Lowell just four days ago.
Senior outside hitter
Aubrey Bobo paved the way for the Golden Knights with 15 kills, nine digs and three total blocks. Meanwhile, junior middle hitter
Kaitlyn Jasnica added eight kills and four blocks, while sophomore middle hitter
Alex Gagliano contributed seven kills, hit .636 and put up seven blocks.
Freshman libero
Katy Daniels remained solid in the back row as well for Saint Rose. Daniels picked up 27 digs and also served up three aces. Her final ace helped secure a dramatic 26-24 win for the Golden Knights in the fourth set.
Sophomore middle blocker Blair Havron and freshman middle blocker Phoebe Lettington sparked the Yellow Jackets (15-17). Havron had 11 kills and two blocks, while Lettington threw down nine kills while committing just one error in 17 swings.
Saint Rose put itself in the driver's seat early by taking 25-15 and 25-22 wins throughout the first two sets. Bobo sparked a 10-2 run with a kill in the opening frame. American International handcuffed itself by committing 10 of its 19 total attack errors in the first set alone.
Set two provided a little more drama than the first. The Golden Knights trailed 22-20, but Jasnica turned the momentum with a kill. Saint Rose then took advantage of an attack error, a bad set and an ace from Daniels to take command. Jasnica punctuated things with another kill.
After the Yellow Jackets took a 25-19 decision in set three, the Golden Knights proved their mettle by fighting off a set point in the fourth. American International went up 24-23 thanks to a kill by Havron, thus forcing a Saint Rose timeout. The Golden Knights then got some help with back-to-back errors by the Yellow Jackets, which preceded Daniels' decisive ace.
