NEW HAVEN UPENDS SAINT ROSE 3-0

Sophomore middle hitter Alex Gagliano (left) wound up with six kills, a block and an ace
ALBANY – The University of New Haven added leverage to its title of defending Northeast-10 Conference Champion as the visiting Chargers defeated The College of Saint Rose women's volleyball team 3-0 (16-25, 11-25, 19-25) tonight at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. New Haven has now won 37 consecutive regular-season league matches and kept its 12-match winning streak intact.

The Golden Knights (10-5/5-1 NE-10), who entered the contest along with the Chargers and Stonehill College as one of three unbeaten teams remaining in conference play, received seven kills and four digs from senior outside hitter Aubrey Bobo. Meanwhile, sophomore middle hitter Alex Gagliano added six kills, a block and an ace.

Junior outside hitter Keidy Candelaria led a balanced attack for New Haven (12-4/7-0 NE-10). Candelaria wound up with 10 kills and seven digs, while senior setter Chelsea Alpough finished with 27 assists, six digs and five kills.

In the opening set, Candelaria finished off a pass from Alpough that broke an 8-8 tie. The Chargers scored six of the next seven points to open up a 14-9 margin they would not relinquish. New Haven also took advantage of five service errors by Saint Rose on the way to a 25-16 triumph.

New Haven never trailed in set two after limiting the Golden Knights to just six kills and an .087 hitting percentage. The Chargers hit .571 themselves and raced out to a 12-2 lead on the way to a 25-11 decision.

Saint Rose began finding its rhythm in set three. Gagliano sandwiched a pair of kills around a kill by Bobo that gave the Golden Knights a 4-1 edge. Things went back and forth, although Saint Rose still led 14-13 thanks to an ace from sophomore setter Ariana Wilson. However, New Haven responded with a 9-2 jaunt en route to a 25-19 win.

Both squads return to action Friday night with a pair of league matches on the schedule. Saint Rose is set to host Bentley University, while New Haven returns home to entertain Southern New Hampshire University. Both matches are slated to start at 7:00 pm.
