Robert Dorn was named the head track and field coach at The College of Saint Rose when the program resumed its status as an intercollegiate sport in the spring of 2006. Now entering his ninth season at the helm, Dorn continues to re-establish the programs among the elite squads in the Northeast-10 Conference.
Macky Lloyd (‘12/’13) for the second time in three years went to the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships and also won the NE-10 3,000 meter steeplechase. Additionally, he qualified as an All-America at the NCAA mile competition as well as securing a spot to the outdoor championships in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Senior Soroya Hudson joined Lloyd at the outdoor festivities with a spot in the triple jump. Hudson became the first female field participant in Saint Rose accolades to qualify.
The 2013 campaign also witnessed the continued progress of seniors Jessica Razy and Bridget Buckley. Each continued to etch their names in the record books through the guidance of Dorn.
Six student-athletes were named to the 2012 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division II track and field All-East Region squad last season under Dorn’s tutelage for both indoor and outdoor. In terms of team finishes, the men’s squad placed ninth at the NE-10 indoor championships followed by a sixth place showing at the outdoor meet. The women’s group marked sixth place finishes in both events.Â
In addition to individual success for Lloyd and Hudson in 2011, six student-athletes garnered All-East Region accolades by season's end.Â
Dorn guided the men's outdoor track team to its highest point total ever en route to a fourth place finish at the 2010 NE-10 Championships. The team recorded a pair of meet records in the process. Meanwhile, the women finished fifth in 2009 and have won the 10,000-meter run at two of the past four outdoor championships. Melissa Bredice (’10) was crowned conference champion in 2008, while Meaghan Lucie (’11) ran a winning time in 2009.
Dorn’s student-athletes have also excelled in the classroom. In August, the women's squad was one of 74 NCAA Division II institutions honored by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as an All-Academic recipient.
Dorn arrived at Saint Rose from Albany High School where he served as the head coach of the girl's track and field team. He also served as Albany's head coach of cross country since 1995. Dorn spearheaded the program development, scheduling and fundraising efforts for the Falcon cross country and girl's track and field programs.
Dorn has additional experience as the director and coach of the Capital District Rockets Track Club, which is a member of the United States Association of Track and Field (USATF). Dorn, who has held the post since 1996, trains elementary and high school athletes for local, regional and national competition with the Rockets.
Dorn graduated from SUNY Cortland in 1984 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. He then earned his master's there in 1991.
During his undergraduate career at the central New York school, Dorn participated on the Red Dragon cross country and track and field teams. Upon his graduation, he took his first coaching job as an assistant at Cortland where he remained until 1987.
