13 KILLS FOR VARGAS AGAINST CONFERENCE-BEST AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL


ALBANY, N.Y.- The College of Saint Rose fell to American International in straight sets tonight in Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium, with the Northeast-10 Conference-leading Yellow Jackets earning the victory with set scores of 25-16, 28-26, and 25-21.

Junior outside hitter Jessica Vargas tallied 13 kills to lead Saint Rose (7-9/1-2 NE10) in the setback. Sophomore middle blocker Karleigh Fripp recorded eight kills on a .500 swing rate. 

The Golden Knights best moments came in a tight second set in which Saint Rose landed 18 kills, including eight from Vargas.

Graduate student outside hitter Andrea Serra Rosa and sophomore outside hitter Paola Soto-Burgos had 12 and 11 kills, respectively, for American International (14-1/3-0 NE10). Junior setter Naomi Eckert Rivera distributed 41 assists.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose turns around to host Adelphi tomorrow at 11:00 am while the Yellow Jackets head home to welcome New Haven on Tuesday night.
Notes: The Golden Knights are in a stretch of five home contests in seven matches...Junior setter Valeria Jorge ranks third in the league with 8.69 assists per set…Vargas (162 kills) and sophomore middle blocker Julia Cavalcanti (127 kills) respectively rank fifth and 11th in the conference in kills…Cavalcanti is also second the NE10 with 30 aces and Fripp owns the league's third-best swing percentage with a mark of .357…Vargas was named to the NE10 weekly honor roll for the week ending Sunday, September 25.
