ALBANY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose capped its 2022 campaign in stellar fashion by roaring back from a three goal, second half deficit to upend #23 Saint Anselm 13-12 in overtime on Senior Day this afternoon at Sullivan Field within the Plumeri Sports Complex.
It marked the third time this season that the Golden Knights (9-8/5-8 NE10) defeated a nationally ranked team at home.
"Today was the perfect ending to a great season for this young team. We were able to fight back after being in a deficit for a majority of the game. Everyone has grown so much this year. It has been so fun to watch. Our seniors have done an amazing job leading us throughout the past few years and so it was great to send them off with a thrilling win. It will be a tough Senior Day to beat," said Head Coach
Sarah Martin.
It was a freshman though who ended it.
Katy McPeak provided the game-winner with 1:36 elapsed in the extra session after Saint Rose struck three times within a 1:20 span throughout the final three minutes of regulation to turn an 11-9 deficit into a 12-11 lead. The Hawks (7-9/5-8 NE10) tied it 12-12 with 1:26 to go to force the additional period.
Saint Rose won the opening draw of overtime and generated two free position opportunities that went for naught, until McPeak made the third one pay off to set off a well-deserved celebration.
Saint Rose trailed 8-6 at halftime, but dominated the rest of way by generating an 18-5 shot-on-goal advantage and an 8-4 groundball differential following intermission.
The eventual outcome was hard to foreshadow in the early going though as the Golden Knights were down four goals, 8-4, with 3:31 remaining in the second quarter and were still down three, 10-7, at the 6:05 juncture of the third. However, they kept pushing forward to afford themselves a chance.
