SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose showed its mettle by threatening late, but ultimately could not overcome a six-run deficit in today's 6-2 defeat at Le Moyne in the opening round of the Northeasat-10 Conference Championship Tournament.
Southwest division seven seed Saint Rose scored a pair in the seventh to make it interesting at 6-2. The Golden Knights then loaded the bases in the eighth and put the first two hitters on in the ninth to no avail.
Â
Senior shortstop
Andrew Pedone closed out his stellar career in outstanding fashion by going 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI, while junior left fielder
Samuel Brioso finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and a double for Saint Rose (8-14).
Â
Junior second baseman Drew Carroll went 3-for-5, and junior designated hitter Ty Syta wound up 3-for-3 with a two-run double and a solo homer to pace second seed Le Moyne (14-7). That proved more than enough for freshman southpaw Max Parker who allowed two runs on six hits in 6.2 innings of work on the way to his first career victory.
Â
"It was great to get out on the field together to practice, play games and have a season after having last year end so abruptly due to COVID," said Head Coach
Wayne Jones. "I'm proud of the team for dealing with the adversity we faced and I'm really appreciative of our players, their families, our coaching staff, the administration and the entire Saint Rose community for working together to make sure our student athletes got the best possible experience they could during these unprecedented times."
The Dolphins jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning and pushed across three more in the third, before tacking on a run in both the fifth and sixth.
Â
Syta's solo shot made it 1-0 and his two-run double down the left field line accounted for most of the damage in the third. Freshman catcher Brady Fureno drove in the fifth run with a bases loaded infield single in the fifth, and senior third baseman Derrick Miller slapped an RBI base hit through the left side in the sixth.
Â
Regardless, the Golden Knights made things interesting in the seventh. Freshman second baseman
Jelani Hamer stroked a two-out base hit up the middle, Brioso doubled down the left field line to put a pair in scoring position, and Pedone came through with a base hit that scored Hamer and Brioso. Unfortunately, Saint Rose could not manufacture any more runs the rest of the afternoon.
Â
Looking ahead, Le Moyne will now host either third seed New Haven or sixth seed Pace in Thursday's division semifinal.
Notes: Today marked the Golden Knights fourth NE10 Championship Tournament appearance since joining the league in 2001…Saint Rose also made appearances in 2002, 2003, and 2016…The latter team advanced to the title game where the Golden Knights fell 5-4 to Southern New Hampshire…Pedone finished with a team-high 11 multi-hit performances on the year.
