PACE SPOILS LONG AWAITED RETURN TO BOB BELLIZZI FIELD FOR SAINT ROSE

ALBANY, N.Y. – Pace University scored four runs in the ninth inning to upend The College of Saint Rose 8-7 in today's first game of the 2021 season-opener at Bob Bellizzi Field. It marked the first time in exactly 700 days since the Golden Knights last played a game on their home diamond.

The Setters (7-2/3-1 NE10) then used that momentum to take the nightcap 9-2 of the Northeast-10 Conference twin-bill. Pace scored five times in the third inning and added four more in the fifth, before the Golden Knights pushed across a pair in the final and seventh inning.

Junior first baseman Jack McDonald finished 4-for-8 with three RBI and senior shortstop Andrew Pedone went 4-for-9 with a run scored throughout the two games to lead the Saint Rose (0-2/0-2 NE10) offense. Also, sophomore second baseman Jared Reed finished 2-for-3 with a double out of the nine hole in the finale.

On the mound, senior right-hander Johnny Pohlman tossed 1.2 innings of no-hit ball out of the bullpen in the opener and sophomore right-hander Sean Crowley worked 2.0 frames without surrendering a hit in game-two.

Saint Rose scored five unanswered runs in the first game that turned a 4-2, fifth inning deficit into a 7-4 lead heading to the ninth after junior third baseman Francisco Infante doubled to the left-center field gap that put the final touch on the surge.

However, senior designated hitter Mitchell McCabe belted a two-run double to center that tied the game 7-7 in the ninth. One batter later, McCabe scored the winning run on an error.

In the second game, Pace senior right fielder Matt Almonte stroked a two-run single to highlight the third and senior left fielder Harrison Treble belted a three-run triple to right that caused most of the damage in the fifth.

Looking ahead, the two squads are scheduled to conclude the series with Monday's 1:00 pm double-dip. Per Northeast-10 Conference and New York State Department of Health guidelines, NO SPECTATORS at this point will be permitted to attend any games scheduled for the Plumeri Sports Complex or on the road on order to keep our student-athletes and staff sate. Fans can watch the contest on the NE10NOW Network.
