AMHERST, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose benefited from its experienced corps that is coming off its 2019 run to the NCAA Championship National Semifinals and a talented group of newcomers to upend host Daemen 2-0 today.
Â
The Golden Knights (1-0) picked up right where they left off following a 471-day layoff. The squad's veterans set the tone and three freshmen filled out the scoring column. Saint Rose outshot the host Wildcats (0-1) 22-3 and developed 11 corner kicks, while only allowing a pair. In addition, nine players recorded at least one shot.
Â
"It was great to be back on the pitch again after such a long layoff from competition. We've been together as a full team for five days and I thought we played with a lot of intensity, grit, and passion," said head coach
Laurie Darling Gutheil. "Returning starters
Marika Laurendeau,
Sanna Rein,
Ciera Lundy, and
Olivia Boucher from the 2019 Final Four team led our squad who stepped up to the challenge. We combined athletic ability, physical presence, and good possession along with a direct attack to breakdown our opponent and create goal scoring chances."
Â
Freshman midfielder/forward
Samantha Diaz provided the game-winner midway through the first half when she touched home a corner off the foot of fellow rookie midfielder
Sabrina Mazza. Freshman
Isabella O'Clair drove home a strike from outside the box with eight minutes remaining in the match to close out the scoring.
Â
"Eight freshmen got their first experience playing at the collegiate level and made an immediate impact. Sabrina (Mazza) placed a fantastic corner kick to Samantha (Diaz) for her first career goal. Isabella (O'Clair) added an insurance goal with an outstanding strike and our defense did a great job limiting their chances," said Darling Gutheil.
Â
"I want to thank (Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics)
Lori Anctil and the athletic administration team at Saint Rose for making it possible for us to return to the field. Our coaching staff is really excited for the opportunity to continue developing this team as we move forward to our next game," said Darling Gutheil.
Â
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are scheduled to play their next official match on Friday, April 16 when Le Moyne visits Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm. Meanwhile, Daemen has a 4:00 pm date at Roberts Wesleyan in Rochester next Saturday.
Note on In-Person Attendance at Games: All games are subject to change based upon COVID-19 surveillance testing for both The College of Saint Rose and its opponents. In addition, per New York State Department of Health guidelines and the Northeast-10 Conference,
no spectators at this point will be permitted to attend games scheduled for the Plumeri Sports Complex. The College will continue to monitor this situation with the hope of potentially allowing fans in some capacity at a later date.
