ALBANY, N.Y. – After dropping back-to-back, three-point games this week, The College of Saint Rose came out on the right end with today's 78-73 win against visiting American International. In the process, the Golden Knights avenged last night's 79-76 setback against the Yellow Jackets (1-5) in Springfield.
Â
Sophomore forward
Josh McGettigan tossed in a career-high 24 points behind 10-for-13 shooting from the floor and freshman forward
Shane O'Dell scored 10 of his 15 points after halftime to pace the Golden Knights (3-3). Senior guard
Adam Anderson contributed 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting, while freshman guard
Tray Alexander handed out seven assists with only a pair of turnovers. In addition, freshman guard
Keegan Zoller had eight points in nine minutes of action.
Â
"This has been a very tough week playing four games in six days and I thought our guys handled today's game with a real sense of urgency. We got a huge lift from Shane and Josh, and Tray made winning plays down the stretch. We won the battle on the glass today and made 82.0 percent of our free throws, which helped to secure the win," said Head Coach
Mike Perno.
Â
The Golden Knights led for 73.0 percent of the game and manufactured a 39-34 rebound differential throughout the afternoon.
Â
They thus appeared to be in the driver's seat with a 10-0 jaunt that transformed a 59-58 deficit with 7:44 remaining into a 68-59 lead with 4:19 showing on the clock. Anderson put back an offensive rebound while being fouled to ignite the run with a three-point play, before O'Dell finished it with a put-back himself.
Â
However, American International hung around and strung together a 12-4 run that brought the Yellow Jackets to within a point, 72-71, with 12 seconds left. Freshman guard Carlos Hubb capped the spurt by converting a four-point play.
Â
The two teams then traded a pair of free throws to keep it a one-point affair, but Alexander drew a foul and converted both ends of a one-and-one to make it a three-point, 76-73 game with 10 ticks to go. The Yellow Jackets came up empty on their ensuing possession and O'Dell canned both ends of his one-and-one to account for the final score.
Â
Senior guard Jordan Vidal paced American International with 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting.
Â
Looking ahead, these two teams are scheduled to meet again Wednesday in Springfield, Mass. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm from Henry A. Butova Gymnasium.
