GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose got a stop out of a timeout on the game's final possession to hold off host Adelphi 82-81 in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both squads today. The contest featured 24 lead changes and seven ties.
"I was really proud of this group today. We knew it wasn't going to be easy and we stayed the course for 40 minutes. Every guy that played competed and added to the game in a positive light. We made enough plays down the stretch and we look forward to cleaning some things up and then getting back out there on Tuesday versus Le Moyne for our home opener," said head coach
Mike Perno.
Freshman forward
Shane O'Dell canned a pair of free throws to put Saint Rose ahead, 80-79, for the final time with 1:49 remaining. Sophomore forward
Josh McGettigan then knocked down a jumper after Adelphi (2-1/0-1 NE10) came up empty at the other end to make it a three-point game.
Adelphi got back to within one when senior guard Isaiah Salter finished a driving layup with 46 second left and had a chance to win it after McGettigan's first attempt on a one-and-one circled the rim and rolled out with 12 ticks to go.
Each team then called consecutive time outs, before Saint Rose forced Panthers' senior guard Ronnie Silva to toss up a contested jumper that missed at the buzzer.
The Golden Knights (3-0/1-0 NE10) put four players in twin-figures scoring for the third time in as many games this season and got 27 points from its bench.
O'Dell finished with 22 points and eight rebounds, to go along with a career-high five assists to lead Saint Rose. Fifth-year forward
Kevin Lynch finished with 12 points and six boards. Sophomore forward
Cartier Bowman tossed in 12 points and sophomore guard
Manasseh Small added 10. Freshman guard
Tray Alexander scored eight points and handed out five assists.
For Adelphi, graduate student guard Chris Coalman scored a game-high 20 points, behind 4-for-8 shooting from the arc, and fellow graduate student guard Adonis Williams registered a "double-double" with 19 points and 10 boards.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose will play its 2021-22 home opener Tuesday versus NE10 rival Le Moyne. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm, following the women's 5:30 pm game. Masks will need to be worn by anyone in attendance and food/drink will not be allowed inside Nolan Gymnasium. Meanwhile, Adelphi has a 6:00 pm non-league game at Jefferson University Tuesday in Philadelphia.
