CARY, N.C. – The College of Saint Rose scored all 11 of its runs throughout its final five at-bats to close out its 2020 spring break trip with today's 11-7 victory against Clarion at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
Nine different players had at least one hit for the Golden Knights (6-6) who have now won four of their last five.
Senior designated hitter
Jon Montesanti finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI to lead the offensive barrage. Sophomore first baseman
Jack McDonald went 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored, while senior shortstop
Andrew Pedone, senior right fielder
Garrett Klahr, and junior left fielder
Stephan MacMeans also had two hits apiece.
Sophomore right-hander
Danny Owen and senior right-hander
Richard Umholtz combined to throw 2.2 innings of no-hit ball, while senior starting right-hander
Frankie Pizzo allowed two runs on four hits and fanned six in 4.1 innings of work.
Owen came on in the fifth with the bases loaded and the scored tied 2-2. He subsequently induced an inning ending double play ground ball to foreshadow his first collegiate victory.
Senior center fielder Chandler Palvas finished 2-fo-4 and belted a grand slam in the ninth to pace the Golden Eagles (3-12).
Saint Rose jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth and added three more runs in the fifth, seventh, and eighth innings to boost its advantage to 11-3, before Palvas' shot in the ninth rounded out the scoring.
Klahr belted a two-out, two-run single in the fourth, McDonald had a two-run double to highlight the fifth, freshman center fielder
Janiel Ramirez brought across two more with a base hit in the seventh, and McDonald and Montesanti drove home a run each in the eighth.
Up ahead, the Golden Knights are scheduled to begin the "Northern Portion" of their 2020 slate with a noon twin-bill at Queens College next Saturday in Flushing. Meanwhile, Clarion has a 2:00 pm doubleheader at Salem University Friday.
Notes: McDonald has now hit in five straight games at a .529 (9-for-17) clip with eight RBI and an .824 slugging percentage…Sophomore catcher
Samuel Brioso had a base hit in the fifth to extend his on-base streak to 10 games…Pedone and McDonald raised their respective batting averages today to .385 (15-for-39) and .371 (13-for-35) on the year.
