ALBANY, N.Y. – Junior guard
Adam Anderson knocked down a 15-foot jumper from the left baseline at the buzzer to allow The College of Saint Rose to triumphantly cap Senior Night with a 75-73 victory versus American International this evening.
Â
Both squads had chances to win it in the final 30 seconds after the Yellow Jackets (9-19/3-11 NE10) junior guard Jordan Vidal sank a pair of free throws to tie the game for only the second time, 73-73.
Â
The Golden Knights (6-22/3-16 NE10) then turned the ball over on a shot clock violation with 1.2 seconds remaining. However, American International handed it right back to them after their attempted long inbounds pass ricocheted off the ceiling. Senior guard
Michael Wearne then inbounded the ball to Anderson, who calmly sank the game-winning jumper as time expired.
Â
"I'm very proud of this group. We have grown throughout the course of the year and continued to get better every day. It was great to end the season on a high note and get ready to build for the future. Adam hit an unbelievable shot and it was great to send our lone senior (
Michael Wearne) out with a win," said head coach
Mike Perno.
Â
Sophomore forward
Sekou Sylla wrapped up his outstanding season with his nation leading 20th "double-double" of the year. Freshman swing
Cartier Bowman registered his fifth such feat. Sylla led five Saint Rose players in twin figures scoring with 18 points to go with 15 rebounds, while Bowman finished with 13 points and 12 boards. Anderson and senior guard
Michael Wearne scored 14 apiece, while freshman forward
Josh McGettigan added 11. Wearne also handed out a game-high six assists.
Â
Senior forward Trevaun Hyatt tossed in 16 points, while senior swing Zekiah Owens contributed 14 points and nine rebounds to pace the Yellow Jackets (9-19/3-11 NE10).
Â
The Golden Knights appeared to be in pretty good shape most of the evening. They led for all but two minutes and generated their largest cushon of 11 points, 65-54, with 8:13 remaining after McGettigan knocked down a 3-pointer. However, American International took off on a 14-6 run that cut its deficit to three, 71-68, with 2:38 showing on the clock. After Saint Rose came up empty, junior guard Shyheim Hicks canned a trey that tied the contest for the first time, 71-71, with 1:57 to go.
Â
Both teams then made a pair of free throws to set the stage for the wild finish.
