ALBANY, N.Y. - The College of Saint Rose manufactured a 20-9 shot advantage to deliver head coach
Laurie Darling Gutheil her 350th victory behind tonight's 3-0 season-opening triumph against visiting Queens College. Darling Gutheil is now one of a mere 26 NCAA women's soccer coaches at any level to reach that milestone.
Â
Senior midfielder
Sanja Ratkovic provided what proved to be the game-winner with 8:01 gone by when she drove home her own rebound from inside the area. Thirty minutes later, senior forward
Nina Predanic converted a penalty kick to afford the Golden Knights (1-0) a 2-0 halftime lead.
Â
Saint Rose, which had eight first-year players see action, got its third strike from junior forward
Ciera Lundy who finished a loft over the top from senior midfielder
Eva Frazzoni at the 59:28 mark.
Â
In goal, junior
Marika Laurendeau registered four saves. Freshman Ariana Vargas turned aside four threats on target for Queens (0-1) at the other end.
Â
Looking ahead, both sides get back on the pitch Sunday with non-league matches. The Golden Knights host Jefferson University at 12:00 pm, while Queens takes on Concordia at 2:00 pm.
Head coach Laurie Darling Gutheil on 350 wins: "For me, it is not about earning this type of a milestone. Rather, it's about getting each team that I have the privilege to coach to develop and become the absolute best that they can become in a season. For a long time, I've been very blessed with special players who share the same love and passion for the game as I do. The relationships I've built with former and current players have enhanced my life tremendously. "I feel fortunate to have an outstanding coaching staff and we all work incredibly hard to bring our best efforts forward for the benefit of our players, past and present. I believe in the superb education that student-athletes earn at Saint Rose. The faculty and staff are outstanding and they form the cornerstone of our players' academic success. I'm grateful to have coached my entire career as a Golden Knight. I share these 350 wins with my family, my assistant coaches and all Saint Rose women's soccer players."
