ALBANY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose swept today's Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader vs. American International. The Golden Knights (10-8/4-2 NE10) erased a three-run deficit to win the first game, 12-11 in eight innings, before taking the nightcap, 7-3.
"I couldn't be more pleased with the resiliency and fight we had today," said Saint Rose Head Coach
Abby Arceneaux. "No matter what happened, we kept pushing to get the sweep. Our bats were on fire and our pitchers worked well together to pick each other up."
Senior infielder
Briana Bowen drove a single to left for the walk-off win in the wild opener. The lead-off hitter was 3-for-5 with three runs scored in the victory.
After American International (6-14/3-6 NE10) scratched across a pair of runs in the first and second innings en route to a 4-1 lead, freshman catcher
Katie Drogo tied the game with a three-run homer to left center.
Saint Rose took a 5-4 lead in the third when junior right-hander
Kylee Warner singled home sophomore infielder
Savanna Liverio with two outs.
The Yellow Jackets regained the advantage with a five-run fifth. Sophomore pinch hitter Brianna Rivera had the big hit of the outburst with a two-out grand slam.
Saint Rose answered with six runs in its half to take back the lead. Liverio plated two with a single, while freshman shortstop
Taylor Matlock, senior outfielder
Erin Maloney and Warner each had RBI doubles.
AIC sophomore designated player Makaylah Mutz drove one off the scoreboard in the sixth to re-knot the score and eventually send the game into extras.
The Golden Knights pounded out 18 hits in the opener. Bowen, Drogo, Liverio and Maloney each had three hits, while sophomore right-hander
Emily Kurtzner permitted just one Yellow Jacket hit across the final three innings to earn the win.
Saint Rose jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the nightcap.
Sophomore catcher
Liz D'Agostino commenced the scoring when she doubled home Matlock in the second.
The Golden Knights tacked on five runs in the third. Maloney blasted a three-run homer to left-center to highlight the rally.
Following a two-run fifth for American International, Saint Rose got one back in its half. Sophomore outfielder
Alissa Folts singled in senior pinch runner
Samantha LaBarbera for the tally.
When the Yellow Jackets began to mount a rally off a tiring Kurtzner in the sixth, Arceneaux went to freshman right-hander
Samantha Allen to shut the door. The reigning NE10 Rookie of the Week wriggled out of the bases-loaded, nobody out jam relatively well, allowing just one of the inherited runners to score.
Maloney was 2-for-3 in the nightcap to finish hitting .625 (5-for-8) with four RBI in the sweep. Kurtzner struck out three Yellow Jackets in her eight innings to pick up both victories in the circle (3-3).
Saint Rose has a non-conference doubleheader tomorrow at 3:00 pm vs. Saint Thomas Aquinas. American International also has a non-conference home twin-bill on deck. The Yellow Jackets entertain LIU Post on Friday afternoon.
