WORCESTER, Mass. – The College of Saint Rose had its historic season come to a close with this afternoon's 2-1 defeat at Assumption in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Final. Both sides entered the contests seeking their first NE10 title.
Â
Assumption thus earned an automatic berth to upcoming NCAA Tournament and established itself as only the second, fifth-seed to win the conference championship. The other is New Hampshire College (Now Southern New Hampshire), which beat second-seed Saint Anselm 1-0 in 2000.
Â
"It's always disappointing when you are so close to winning a title, but I was so proud of the effort the boys put forth today. We were a little short-handed without a couple of keys starters, but that shouldn't take away from a well-earned win by Assumption. This season has been unforgettable. So many great memories by such a special group of guys. I'm going to miss being out on the field with this team, and they all should be so proud of how far they have elevated our program," said head coach
John Ciano.
Â
The Greyhounds (12-7-0) scored midway through each half, but the Golden Knights characteristically never backed down and made it interesting throughout the final three minutes after sophomore midfielder
Filippo Bellú delivered a shot from 30-yards out on the right flank that bounced in the area before landing inside the lower left post.
Â
The game was evenly played as the sixth-seed Golden Knights manufactured a 12-11 shot advantage, while each side manufactured three corner kicks. Senior keeper
Gianni Carillo recorded a pair of saves in each period for Saint Rose. Sophomore Sebastian Jimenez, the NE10 Goalkeeper of the Year, was forced to come up with seven stops for Assumption.
Â
Junior midfielder Kevin Hernandez put the Greyhounds up 1-0 when he finished a restart from sophomore midfielder Robert Faria with 24:08 elapsed. Sophomore midfielder Tyler Moreau then tallied what proved to be the game-winner when he converted a feed from fellow sophomore midfielder Juan O'Neill.
Â
The Golden Knights did manage to develop some great chances at the other end. Freshman midfielder
Josh Elliott one-timed a rebound that was deflected away by Jimenez at the last moment deep inside the right side of the area with 17 minutes expired. Freshman forward Hilar Halldorsson drove a dangerous shot at the 52:56 mark to keep the suspense intact throughout the contest.
Notes: The Golden Knights also qualified for the NE10 Championship in 2017, 2015, and 2013, falling in the quarterfinals each time…Saint Rose reached the 10-win mark this autumn for the first time in the program's 38-year history…The Golden Knights previously posted nine wins in 1989 and 1990, going 9-11 and 9-8 respectively when they were an NAIA member…Saint Rose lost only one home match all year, a 2-1 double overtime setback to Molloy back in September.
Elite 24 Award: Sophomore midfielder
Harry Soederlind earned the prestigious NE10 Elite 24 Award for having the highest grade-point-average among all participants of the men's soccer championship.
All-Tournament Team: Senior midfielder
Niv Fogel and sophomore midfielder
Filippo Bellú were named to NE10 Championship All-Tournament Team.
