ALBANY, N.Y. - The College of Saint Rose cut a 14 point, second half deficit to one, but could not get over the final hurdle in tonight's 92-82 setback to Northeast-10 Conference rival Saint Anselm. The two teams shot a collective 52.5 percent from the floor, but the Hawks (16-3/12-2 NE10) outscored the Golden Knights 44-34 in the paint and 19-10 from the foul line.
Â
Saint Anselm, ranked #20 in this week's NABC National Poll, bounced back from a four point deficit in the opening three minutes to go in the locker room up 14, 50-36, at intermission. It was still a 14-point game, 65-51, with 13:58 remaining when Saint Rose took off on a 20-7 jaunt throughout the ensuing seven minutes that trimmed its margin to a point, 72-71, with 6:45 to go. Junior guard
Michael Wearne sandwiched the spurt with a pair of 3-pointers.
Â
However, the Hawks countered with nine unanswered points that put them back in control, 81-71, with 3:55 remaining. The Golden Knights got no closer than eight the rest of the way.
Â
Wearne led four Saint Rose double-figure point producers with a career-high 17 behind 5-for-9 shooting from the arc. Freshman forward
Sekou Sylla, the reigning NE10 Rookie of the Week, finished with 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while sophomore guard
Adam Anderson and senior forward
Matt Cerutti wound up with 15 and 13 respectively. Sophomore forward
Jeff Allen added nine points in 22 minutes off the bench.
Â
Sophomore forward Chris Paul recorded a double-double of 22 points and 11 boards, and senior guard Tim Guers, a preseason All-American, tossed in 20 points and handed out seven assists without a turnover to propel Saint Anselm.
Â
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are back home Saturday to host league rival Merrimack. Tip-off is set for 3:30 pm. Meanwhile, the Hawks are off until next Wednesday when they host Franklin Pierce at 7:30 pm. Saturday's game may be viewed live on
