SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team rallied from a 16-point third quarter deficit to make it a three-point game with less than minute remaining before falling 62-57 at American International this evening.
Junior guard
Isa Vara de Rey led Saint Rose (9-15/7-12
Northeast-10 Conference) in scoring with 12 points. Sophomore forward
Leah Dollard added 10 points.
Junior forward Dana Watts topped the Yellow Jackets (12-14, 6-12 NE10) with 23 points on 7-of-16 shooting. The All-American, who went 9-of-9 from the line, grabbed 13 rebounds for her 17th "double-double" of the season. Junior guard Alyssa Guyon tossed in 11 points for American International, now winners in three-straight games.
The Yellow Jackets, which never trailed, began the game 7-of-11 from the field to get out to a 21-7 first quarter lead. The Golden Knights battled back, using a 12-0 second quarter run to make it a one possession game, 30-27, with 2:34 remaining before intermission. However, AIC closed the half on an 8-2 jaunt to hold a 38-29 lead at the break.
Saint Rose utilized a 15-3 fourth quarter run to again make it three-point game, 56-53, with 1:12 remaining. Watts took over from there, totaling the final six points for American International.
Looking ahead, both teams have NE10 games on Saturday at 1:30 pm. The Golden Knights will host Le Moyne in the Upstate Challenge, while American International heads south on 91 to play at New Haven.
