SAINT ROSE DROPS NE10 OPENER, 59-53 TO SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE

Clasen tops Golden Knights with 13 points

ALBANY, N.Y. - The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team fell 59-53 to Southern Connecticut State in tonight's Northeast-10 Conference opener. The visiting Owls (3-0/1-0 NE10) capped the tightly-contested affair on a 7-0 run across the final minute to earn the road victory.

Junior guard Courtney Clasen led the Golden Knights (2-1/0-1 NE10) in scoring with 13 points on 50 percent shooting. Senior forward Karissa Birthwright, who battled foul trouble much of the evening, tossed in 11.

Southern Connecticut State junior forward Kiana Steinauer topped all players with 17 points, including eight in the fourth quarter. She secured 10 rebounds to register her third "double-double" of the young season. Junior forward Jessica Fressle added 13 points, on 5-of-9 shooting, and nine rebounds.

Saint Rose began its home opener on an 8-2 run. Senior guards Isa Vara de Rey and Ashley Vanderwall knocked down treys during the stretch. The Owls would battle back to trail just 10-8 at the end of the first quarter. The back-and-forth affair featured 15 lead changes, eight of which came in the final period, and seven ties.

Looking ahead, both teams have NE10 games on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 pm. Saint Rose will travel to Springfield, Mass. to play American International. Meanwhile, SCSU will host Le Moyne. Before taking on the Dolphins, Southern Connecticut State has an exhibition at UConn tomorrow night.
