GOLDEN KNIGHTS STRIKE EARLY TO DEFEAT AIC

Saint Rose takes season series from the Yellow Jackets

SPRINGFIELD–The College of Saint Rose broke out to a 6-3 lead after two innings on the way to today's 7-5 win at Northeast-10 Conference rival American International.

Senior shortstop Tyler Ungerland drove in a pair of runs while junior center fielder Matt McKinnon and freshman designated hitter Ernie Geraci finished with two hits apiece as the Golden Knights took the season series.

On the hill, junior right-hander Caleb Gregg found his stride after surrendering three runs in the first. Gregg wound up allowing a run on just four hits over his final 6.0 innings of work to improve his record to 4-1 on the year.

"Caleb Gregg settled in after the first and pitched great. It was a total team win. I'm proud of the guys for battling and winning the series," said head coach Wayne Jones.

Ungerland's bases loaded, two-out double in the first put the Golden Knights (7-27/6-15 NE10) up 2-0. Saint Rose then sent nine batters to the plate in a four-run, second that made it a three run ballgame after the Yellow Jackets (14-26/8-16 NE10) had scored three times in the home half of the first.

The Golden Knights increased their advantage to 7-3 in the fifth when Geraci tripled home senior third baseman Alex Chandler.

American International added a run in the sixth, but Gregg worked out of a bases loaded jam to limit the damage. The Yellow Jackets closed out the scoring with a run in the ninth. However, freshman right-hander John Braun got the final out with the potential tying run at the plate en route to his first collegiate save.

For the Yellow Jackets, freshman right fielder Andrew Ciacciarelli, freshman designated hitter Mike Wroth, and senior third baseman K.J. White had two hits apiece.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose has a 3:30 pm league date at Southern Connecticut State tomorrow. The Golden Knights then return home Saturday for their regular-season finale with a 12:00 pm doubleheader versus St. Joseph (VT). Meanwhile, American International has a home non-league game versus Post University Wednesday. That one is also scheduled to get underway at 3:30 pm.
