CARY, N.C.–The College of Saint Rose dropped a pair of games in the Division II Challenge at the USA Baseball National Training Center today. The Golden Knights fell 7-5 to Saint Augustine's and 3-2 to Winston-Salem State.
The teams combined for 25 hits in the opener. Freshmen outfielders
Ernie Geraci and Anthony Scheller went five-for-eight with three runs scored.
The Golden Knights tallied one in the seventh and two in the eighth to make it a one-run game. However, St. Augustine's added an insurance run in the ninth and quickly retired Saint Rose to end it.
The bats went quiet in the second game, as the Rams and Golden Knights only had eight hits between them.
After Winston-Salem (10-11) got a pair of runs off senior left-hander
Michael Pastore in the fifth, the Golden Knights (1-11) got one right back in the sixth. Scheller led off with a double and came home on a fielder's choice by senior outfielder
Alex Chandler.
The Rams regained a two-run lead in the seventh when junior shortstop Randal Ortiz homered off sophomore right-hander
Casey Krebs.
In the eighth, freshman second baseman
Andrew Pedone singled in Scheller to make it a 3-2 contest.
The Golden Knights went 1-2-3 in the ninth to end it.
On the mound, Pastore, Krebs and sophomore right-hander
Cody Mooney combined to hold the Rams to three hits and strike out seven.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose is scheduled to play next Saturday, March 19 at Mercy. The non-conference doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12:00 pm.
