ALBANY-Merrimack scored a pair of goals a mere nine seconds apart in the early going to upend The College of Saint Rose 3-1 in
Northeast-10 Conference action today at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
Â
In the process, the Golden Knights (4-6-0/4-3-0 NE10) had their three match win streak snapped while the Warriors, who are ranked #20 in this week's United Soccer Coaches National Poll, ran their unbeaten stretch to eight.
Â
Senior forward
Suleiman Haruna-iya cut the Saint Rose deficit in half with 14:58 gone by when he collected a short loft from junior midfielder
Kyle Clemens and buried a shot from 15-yards out on the left side. However, Merrimack was afforded some breathing room with four minutes left until intermission courtesy of an own goal that proved to be the final outcome.
Â
Freshman forward Filippe Begliardi Ghidini redirected a deflected corner kick to open the scoring with 7:48 elapsed. He then gathered the ball off the ensuing kickoff and drove in a strike from 25-yards out for what proved to be the game winner.
Â
Looking ahead, both sides have home 7:00 pm conference meetings this Tuesday. Saint Rose hosts
Upstate Challenge rival Le Moyne, while the Warriors entertain Saint Anselm.
Notes: The Golden Knights have now won four of their last six matches, with the two setbacks during that span coming at the hands of a pair of nationally ranked opponents…Thirteen different players have figured in the scoring column this autumn…Haruna-iya is tied for 12th among the NE10 leaders with a team-leading 10 points on the year.
