SAINT ROSE CAPITALIZES AGAINST UPSTATE CHALLENGE RIVAL LE MOYNE

ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose took advantage of its opportunities to upend Upstate Challenge and Northeast-10 Conference rival Le Moyne 2-1 tonight at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.

The Dolphins (4-2/1-2 NE-10) had won two straight and surrendered just three goals throughout their five matches to date, but the Golden Knights (3-2/2-1 NE-10) scored once in each half to secure their first home victory of the year.

Sophomore forward Romaine Williamson provided the game-winner with 54:47 elapsed while junior forward Joshua Hanif put Saint Rose up 1-0 at the 40:46 mark. Senior midfielder Mark Gentile brought Le Moyne level with less than two minutes gone by in the second half.

Saint Rose created a beautiful play on the left flank to get on the scoreboard first. Senior midfielder Nick Iuorno delivered a touch in stride to freshman forward Ryan Rooney who lifted a ball into the box to a streaking Hanif who got in the air to head it home into the top-right corner.

Le Moyne countered when Gentile headed in a free kick off the foot of senior back Cal Fitch, which ultimately afforded Williamson a brighter stage to extend his goal scoring streak to four matches. Williamson stripped a Dolphin defender off the ball, dribbled deep down the right flank and let go a volley that whistled into the far upper corner.

The contest got off to a much different start as the Dolphins patiently dictated the pace for most of the first half when they engineered an 8-4 shot advantage and a 5-0 corner kick differential. Le Moyne convrsely kicked its offense into high gear throughout the final 10 minutes while desperately searching for an equalizer.

However, Saint Rose senior keeper Colan Balkwell kept his poise and managed the backline of seniors Tyler Pomakoy and Sam Crocker, and sophomores Nathan Brown and Justyn Verbraska, with confidence throughout that stretch. He also came up with two of his five saves in the waning moments.

Balkwell sprung to the ground to deny sophomore forward Jacob Borssen who tried to bounce a header past him with 82:09 gone by. Four minutes later, he came off his line to thwart a threat by junior back James Goodridge who had created space near the six-yard box.

Le Moyne almost tied it on two other occasions as well. Sophomore midfielder Marcello Palucci bounced a hard shot off the cross bar from 20-yards out and senior forward Fabian Egger flicked a ball just over the crossbar from point blank range less than two minutes prior to time expiring to cap an entertaining evening.

Looking ahead, both sides have NE-10 road matches this Saturday. The Golden Knights will head to Manchester, NH for a 2:00 pm date at Saint Anselm, while the Dolphins will travel to North Andover, MA for a 7:00 pm meeting at Merrimack.
