GOLDEN KNIGHTS GRAB NE-10 OPENER FROM AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY–The College of Saint Rose opened its 2015 Northeast-10 Conference slate on a high note with an 8-4 victory versus American International at Dutchess Stadium Wednesday night. The Golden Knights (4-8/0-1 NE-10) bounced back from a 4-1, second inning deficit by scoring four times in the fifth, once in the seventh and twice more in the eighth.

Senior right-hander Ryan Harper allowed two earned runs on four hits and fanned six throughout 6.1 innings of work to go to 3-1 on the year. Also, junior southpaw Joe Pokrentowski hurled 2.2 innings of one-hit ball to pick up the save.

The Yellow Jackets (3-8/0-1 NE-10) scored twice in both the first and second innings, but Harper and Pokrentowski limited them to a pair of hits the rest of the way. Harper retired 14 straight at one point, while Pokrentowski surrendered only an eighth inning double.

Sophomore shortstop Tyler Ungerland had a fielder's choice RBI in the first to account for the Golden Knights first run. Senior catcher Lukas Nethaway belted a run scoring double and Ungerland smacked a two-run single to account for most of the Saint Rose damage in the fifth.

The Golden Knights then made it 6-4 with an unearned run in the seventh, before freshman first baseman Chris Introcaso lined a two-run, two out base up the middle in the eighth.

Introcaso wound up 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored, senior right fielder Joseph Carcone finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored as well and Ungerland brought across three runs to pace the Saint Rose attack.

For American International, senior first baseman Lucas Vallas drove a two-run homer over the left field fence in the first and graduate student center fielder Dave Clark lined a run scoring triple to the right-center field gap in the second.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose is scheduled to play its home opener this Sunday, March 29 with a 1:00 pm non-league doubleheader versus Dominican at Bob Bellizzi Field. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets tentatively have a 12:00 pm league doubleheader versus Le Moyne on Saturday. Those games are set to be played at Adelphi University on Long Island.
