DOMINATING EFFORT BY SAINT ROSE IS NOT REWARDED

GARDEN CITY, NY–Soccer is renowned as The Beautiful Game, but tonight it displayed its other side. The College of Saint Rose dominating NCAA Tournament first-round effort versus Philadelphia University only afforded the Golden Knights an abrupt end to what had otherwise been another storied season.

Saint Rose, ranked #20 in the final regular-season NSCAA National Poll, had its postseason run halted on penalty kicks after engineering a staggering 32-1 shot advantage and an 8-0 corner kick differential. In the end, the Rams advanced 2-1 in the penalty kick portion and will thus take on host Adelphi in Sunday's second round.

This marks the first time since 2004 that the Golden Knights did not advance past the opening round after gaining an NCAA Tournament berth. Furthermore, this season will represent only the second time in eight years that an NCAA Division II National Semifinal match will not feature Saint Rose, which nonetheless ascended the 15-win plateau for the tenth consecutive autumn.

The Golden Knights fired off seven shots within the opening 20 minutes and owned a 13-0 advantage, including a 4-0 cushion in on-target threats, at halftime and then proceeded to volley 13 more shots at Philadelphia University during the ensuing 45 minutes.

Freshman midfielder Danae Kaldaridou ripped a strike in the 35th minute that rolled along the goal line when Philadelphia senior keeper Courtney Shaw bobbled it, before grabbing the loose ball at the last moment. In the final 10 seconds of the first half, sophomore midfielder Roxana Hernandez sailed a volley just over the crossbar.

In the second half, sophomore forward Morgan Burchhardt delivered a shot that Shaw gathered in at the last moment after another bobble. Junior forward Kristin Carr then nearly brought about an appropriate conclusion in the final three minutes of the first overtime session, but her shot sailed just wide to provide the final piece of evidence that something unusual could be in the offering.
