ANOTHER OUTSTANDING SEASON CONCLUDES AS GRAND VALLEY STATE ADVANCES ON PENALTY KICKS

LOUISVILLE–Another outstanding campaign for The College of Saint Rose came to a conclusion tonight as defending national champion Grand Valley State (21-2-2) advanced 3-0 on penalty kicks after the two squads played to a 1-1 draw through 110 minutes. Senior keeper Ashley Strauss turned aside all three Golden Knights (21-1-3) PK chances, while the Lakers converted each of their opportunities.

The match between the two sides, who were playing in their 14th collective NCAA national semifinal appearance, is officially scored a tie. Grand Valley State will now meet Rollins or Colorado Mines in Saturday's national championship contest that is set to get underway at 3:00 pm.

"It was a very exciting game. Grand Valley has marvelous players that are very technically sound and athletic. We were able to compress the game and create through the midfield at times. There were other times we allowed ourselves to get stretched a bit and that allowed them to dictate the pace," said assistant coach Jim Lennox. "However, our performance was outstanding. We had our chances, we defended well, and that was that."

Grand Valley State manufactured the game's first five shots, but senior forward Carmelina Puopolo made a Golden Knights flurry pay off when she one-timed a loose ball from the middle of the area for her 22nd strike of the year that made it 1-0 five minutes prior to intermission. Junior midfielder Gianna Smith picked up the assist.

The Lakers leveled 11 minutes into the second half when sophomore midfielder Marti Corby sent in a rebound off her own penalty kick after Saint Rose sophomore keeper Ashley Homer made a diving save to her left off the initial shot. Corby was awarded the PK after sophomore forward Kendra Stauffer was tripped up from behind inside the area.

Both teams then had opportunities in the first extra session, as opposed to the second when neither side was able to manufacture any substantial threats.

The Lakers leading scorer, freshman forward Gabriella Mencotti almost ended it in the 105th minute when she let go a shot from 15-yards out that Homer initially deflected before it bounced off the post. A minute later, Puopolo dribbled in alone in transition, but Strauss roamed far from the goal line to eliminate the chance.

In the first half, freshman forward Morgan Burchhardt had the best opportunity for Saint Rose. Burchhardt one-timed a cross that forced Strauss to be on her toes with 32 minutes elapsed. Homer then answered at the other end when she came well off her line with less than two minutes remaining in regulation to deny sophomore midfielder Gabbie Guibord who collected a pass just beyond midfield and dribbled in alone.

From a broader perspective, Saint Rose built upon its reputation as among the strongest NCAA Division II programs in the country. The Golden Knights recorded 16 shutouts, including five in the postseason, surrendered a mere 10 goals, and ascended the 20-win plateau for the seventh consecutive autumn.

"I am so proud of everything we accomplished this year. We wanted to play in the finals. I wanted to play in the finals, but soccer is a game of inches and things happen," said Puopolo; a three time, first-team All-American who closed out her career as the College's all-time leading scorer with 199 points.
