SAINT ROSE DEFEATS PACE IN NE-10 CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTERFINAL

ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose punched its ticket to a 13th consecutive Northeast-10 Conference Championship semifinal with a 2-0 opening-round win versus Pace University today at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.

The second seed Golden Knights (16-1-2), ranked #7 in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire National Poll, will now host third seed Adelphi this Friday, November 7, at 4:00 pm. The Panthers advanced with a 1-0 win against visiting sixth seed Le Moyne earlier today. Saint Rose and Adelphi played to a 0-0 (2OT) draw in Albany back on September 23.

The Golden Knights struck twice 12 minutes apart early in the first half that proved to be enough to upend a Setters (10-9-0) squad that had won four of their previous five matches entering this afternoon.

Senior forward Carmelina Puopolo scored her league-leading 17th goal of the year with 10:15 gone by for what held up as the game- winner. Freshman midfielder Roxana Hernandez then struck with her first collegiate tally with 21:44 elapsed.

Puopolo opened the scoring when she collected the ball just beyond midfield and dribbled down the right side, before letting go a shot that slipped inside the lower fast post. Hernandez made it 2-0 by touching home a Puopolo redirect off a cross from junior midfielder Jennifer Busk with 21:44 gone by.

Saint Rose, which has shutout 12 of its 19 opponents thus far, manufactured an 11-1 shot advantage and a 5-1 corner kick differential throughout the initial 45 minutes.

Sophomore keeper Ashley Homer was not called upon to make a save all afternoon. For the Setters (10-9-0), freshmen Lauren DeSousa and Aisha Chauhan each played a half and recorded six saves collectively.
