BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The University of New Haven recorded a .261 hitting percentage en route to a complete shutout (25-15, 25-21, 25-15) of The College of Saint Rose volleyball team Thursday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA East Regional, held at Hubbell Gym on the campus of the University of Bridgeport.
The seventh-seeded Golden Knights wrap up the 2014 season at 18-9 overall, while the No. 2 Chargers improve to 22-8, and move on to the second round to face third-seeded LIU Post on Friday.
Sophomore Maryellen Devic knocked down 11 kills from the pin to lead the Golden Knights offensively, followed by junior right side Carissa Dube with eight. Setters Tori Daniels and Erica Ziskin assisted on 13 and 15 attacks, respectively, while senior libero Katy Daniels posted 21 digs. Fellow senior Ariana Wilson dug up 13 attacks to aid in the defense, along with two blocks each from sophomore middle hitter Jennifer Gundrum Dube.
The Chargers maintained a constant lead throughout the entire match, and kept Saint Rose at an arm's length for the better part of the game.
The Golden Knights posted set-high runs of 4-0 and 5-0 in games one and two, respectively, but could not come close enough to bridge the gap that New Haven established.
In game three, Saint Rose came as close to a lead as it could at the 7-7 mark, but gave up a 9-1 spurt before calling a timeout. The Golden Knights put up six more points throughout the set, but it would not be enough as UNH grabbed the 25-15 win, and overall victory.
