TWO QUICK GOALS LEAD SAINT ANSELM PAST GOLDEN KNIGHTS

ALBANY–Saint Anselm scored a pair of goals less than 10 minutes apart in the first half that held up in a 2-1 victory versus The College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference action today at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The match was fairly evenly played with the Hawks (4-10-0/2-8-0 NE-10) manufacturing a plus-one shot-on-goal differential.

Junior midfielder Marco Pavlin struck for the Golden Knights (1-12-2/1-6-1 NE-10) with his team leading fourth goal of the year that cut the deficit in half with 58:19 gone by. However, Saint Anselm went into a defensive posture in the final 10 minutes to prevent the match from being leveled.

Junior midfielder Colin Mahoney and sophomore midfielder Jack Lynch each scored for the Hawks, while senior midfielder Ronan O'Callaghan set up both goals. Mahoney made it 1-0 with 37:57 elapsed when he touched an O'Callaghan through pass inside the lower right post from the middle of the area. Lynch then finished a pair of quick touches for what proved to be the game-winner.

Between the posts, Saint Rose sophomore keeper Christian Esposito and Saint Anselm senior Bret Macko each recorded five saves.

Macko made four of his stops in the first period when Saint Rose engineered several opportunities to get on the board. The most dangerous threats came from sophomore forward Tyler Casavant and Pavlin. Casavant forced Macko to make a diving save to his right at the 8:40 mark and Pavlin gathered a nifty feed from junior midfielder Pablo Lajeunesse, before slipping a shot from the top of the box that squirted just wide left after Macko had sprinted off his line.

Looking ahead, both squads are back in action this Tuesday. The Golden Knights have a 3:00 pm meeting at Upstate Challenge rival Le Moyne in Syracuse, while the Hawks have 3:30 pm home date versus Bentley in Manchester, NH.

Prior to today's match, senior backs Spencer Franks and Jeff Kozlowski, senior midfielder Drew Wingate, and senior forward Ercan Kilic were honored during a brief ceremony as part of Senior Day festivities.
