ALBANY, N.Y.- The College of Saint Rose softball team came out on top in both matchups against non-conference foe D'Youville today at Cathy Cummings Haker Field.
The Golden Knights walked-off game one with a 6-5 victory in eight innings before taking a 9-7 win in a rain-shortened five-inning finale to sweep its home-opening doubleheader.
Maddy Bland and
Madison Chandler each posted three hits, while
Ciana Phillips and
Ellen Fuda provided two base hits apiece for the Golden Knights in the opener.
Chandler, Fuda, and
Ella Leduc each drove in RBI in the first two innings to put Saint Rose up 3-0 going into the third stanza.Â
After D'Youville got a run back in the top of the fourth, Bland responded with her second RBI of the day in the bottom half of the frame to move the margin back to 4-1.
The visiting Saints were trailing 5-3 when they plated three runs to take their first lead of the day in the top of the seventh. Needing a run of their own in the seventh, the Golden Knights were down to their final out when Chandler served a single into right field that scored Fuda as the tying run.
D'Youville went down in order to start extra innings, allowing Saint Rose to find the winning run in the bottom of the eighth courtesy of a safety squeeze laid down by
Abby Behrikis that brought home Leduc.
Saint Rose carried the momentum from its walk-off victory into the first inning of game two, as the Golden Knights rocketed ahead 8-0 after their first trip to the plate. Chandler, Behrikis,
Hannah Smith,
Nayana DeAmelia registered one RBI each, while Phillips and Fuda drove in two runs apiece in the monster first inning.
D'Youville would not give up facing the big deficit, as the Saints would slowly chip away at the Saint Rose advantage until a five-run fourth inning allowed the visitors to move within 8-7. That would be the closet D'Youville would get in game two, with the Golden Knights adding an insurance run in the fifth before the action was called due to rain following an official five innings.
Fuda went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Phillips finished 2-for-4 with a solo home run in game two. Smith reached base in all three plate appearances, as she was 2-for-2 with a walk.
Winners of five games in a row, the Golden Knights will look to stay hot against Northeast-10 Conference rival Adelphi in a Saturday doubleheader at Haker Field..
