NEW HAVEN, Conn.- The College of Saint Rose was upended twice at Southern Connecticut State today. The host Owls claimed the pair of Northeast-10 Conference victories by the margins of 3-1 and 6-5.
Sophomore first basemen
Madison Chandler singled home sophomore center fielder
Ciana Phillips in the second inning to provide the lone run for the Golden Knights in the opener.
Game two proved to be a tighter battle, as Saint Rose (7-22/3-9 NE10) mounted a fierce comeback attempt in the late innings that ultimately ended in heartbreaking fashion when Southern Connecticut State scored the winning run on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh.
After the Owls opened the scoring in the first, Chandler leveled the score in the third inning when her RBI single brought around Phillips. Southern Connecticut State, however, responded with two runs in its half of the frame to re-take a 3-1 lead.
Saint Rose struck again in the fifth with a run-scoring single by junior right fielder
Morgan Tyrrell that brought the Golden Knights to within 3-2, though the Southern Connecticut lineup would answer once again with another pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Now facing a 5-2 deficit, Saint Rose would net another score in the sixth with a solo home run off the bat of senior shortstop
Savanna Liverio-Tyler, her team-leading third long ball of the season.
The Golden Knights continued to fight as they trailed by two going into the seventh. After loading the bases with one out in the frame, Liverio-Tyler brought a run in with a walk followed by a sacrifice fly from freshman catcher
Ellen Fuda that evened the score at 6-6, and set up Southern Connecticut State for the walk-off opportunity in the bottom of the frame.
Phillips finished 3-for-4 and three runs scored in the game-two setback. Chandler recorded a pair of hits as well.
Graduate student first basemen Jayden Delaporta went 4-for-4 with four RBI to lead Southern Connecticut State (10-12/5-5 NE10)
Up next, the Golden Knights return to Haker Field on Tuesday to welcome Le Moyne for the program's One Love Game in support of the One Love Foundation. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm in game one of the twin-bill. Southern Connecticut stays home in New Haven to host the Dolphins for a Monday afternoon doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm.
