ALBANY, N.Y.- The College of Saint Rose was upended 3-1 by visiting Southern New Hampshire this afternoon. The Penmen took the win with set scores of 21-25, 25-18, 25-22, and 25-14.
The Golden Knights (7-17/1-9 NE10)Â received 10 kills each from freshmen middle blockers
Julia Cavalcanti and
Karleigh Fripp. The pair landed their strikes with limited attack errors, with Cavalcanti swinging a .333 average and Fripp finishing with a strike percentage of .450.
Junior libero Gabriela Boyrie lifted 15 digs and the setting duo of freshman
Emma Strefling and sophomore
Valeria Jorge teamed for 34 assists.
Cavalcanti and Fripp each landed three kills in the opening frame to help the Golden Knights take the set by a four-point margin. Cavalcanti sparked Saint Rose to the set victory with a 6-0 run from behind the service line in the middle stages of the frame.
The Penmen landed four aces and won 11 of the final 15 points in the stanza to take set number two, 25-18. After evening the sets won at 1-1, Southern New Hampshire would go on to close out the match behind a 33-19 kill advantage and a .333 team swing percentage throughout the final two frames.
Southern New Hampshire (10-8/6-3 NE10) was paced offensively with 18 kills from freshman outside hitter Chiara Di Valerio and 16 strikes landed by junior outside hitter Dai Thawnghmung. Graduate setter Sara Montefameglio led all players with 54 assists and junior outside hitter Juliana Pacini tallied 21 digs in the win.
Both teams return to action with conference match-ups on Friday night. Saint Rose travels to Manchester, N.H. to face Saint Anselm at 6:00 pm while Southern New Hampshire hosts Pace at 7:00 pm.
Notes: Fripp's average of 0.99 blocks per set and the 0.83 blocks per set by Cavalcanti ranked second and fifth in the NE10…As a team, Saint Rose leads the conference with 1.95 blocks per set...Fripp also holds the seventh-highest strike rate in the league with a .295 swing percentage...Junior libero Gabriela Boyrie is 12th in the conference with 3.70 digs per set.
