SAINT ROSE SUFFERS A PAIR OF 3-2 SETBACKS AT NEW HAVEN

Senior right-hander Tracy Chesebrough
WEST HAVEN, CT – The College of Saint Rose softball team had its fortunes turn a day after sweeping its Northeast-10 Conference opener as host University of New Haven handed the Golden Knights a pair of 3-2 setbacks this afternoon at the Chargers' North Campus.

In the opener, New Haven (9-5/2-0 NE-10) overcame a 2-1 deficit going its final at-bat by manufacturing a run in the seventh and another in the eighth to claim its first league win. Sophomore outfielder Samantha Minervi reached on a walk to start the seventh and was sacrificed to second by senior Carolyn Fruin. Following a groundout, junior first baseman Meghan Walter belted an RBI single to knot things at 2-2.

After Saint Rose (6-8/2-2 NE-10) was unable to regain the lead in the eighth, freshman Amy Nepi belted a solo shot down the left field line for what proved to be the final margin.

The Golden Knights initially took a 2-1 edge in the fourth when sophomore designated player Alyssa Farrell laced an RBI single down the left field line that plated senior shortstop Ashley Anderson.

Anderson went 3-for-4 with a run, Farrell was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run, while sophomore right fielder Megan Rios finished 2-for-4. Senior right-hander Nicole Welch fanned four in 7.2 innings of work for Saint Rose in the circle.

In game two, Farrell put the Golden Knights up 2-0 with a two-run single in the first, but New Haven answered with a pair of runs on the bottom of the fifth to make it a 2-2 ballgame. Two innings later, sophomore Chelsea Harold reached on an error with one out and scored two batters later as the Chargers rallied yet again to complete the sweep.

Farrell led the attack for Saint Rose by going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Meanwhile, Rios and junior catcher Amanda Morano accounted for the only other hits in the contest. Senior right-hander Tracy Chesebrough fanned eight batters in 6.1 innings of work and scattered six hits in the loss.

The Golden Knights return to action Tuesday evening when they host Southern Connecticut State University in a 5:00 pm conference doubleheader. The Chargers are also scheduled to play at home Tuesday when American International College comes to down for a 3:00 pm twin-bill.
