ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose men's soccer team walked away with a 3-3 double-overtime draw against visiting Assumption College this afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference match on the campus of UAlbany. The Golden Knights (1-6-1/0-4-1 NE-10) matched the Greyhounds (4-2-2/3-0-2 NE-10) shot for shot as both squads took 17 apiece for the match.
Saint Rose raced out to a 1-0 lead just 6:31 into the match on a well-placed strike by junior midfielder
Justin Paden. Paden was on the receiving end of a drop pass from junior forward
Justin Rogers and beat Assumption sophomore keeper Brandan Sullivan top shelf for the early edge.
The Golden Knights maintained control for the better part of the first period until the Greyhounds were awarded a penalty kick with 34 seconds until halftime. Freshman forward Andrew Kroh buried the ensuing try in the left corner to knot the score at 1-1 after 45 minutes of play.
The second stanza saw both teams trade a pair of goals during an 18 minute span that began with a strike from Saint Rose senior forward
Joe Hunt in the 60th minute. In the process, Hunt tallied his first career goal as a Golden Knight.
Kroh got Assumption even in the 62nd after Saint Rose freshman keeper
Patrik Ohlsson misplayed a long throw by sophomore midfielder Jeffrey Swan in the middle of the penalty box. Kroh was there to play the ball into an empty net to make it a 2-2 ballgame.
In the 66th, Hunt struck again thanks to a pair of precise passes from sophomore fullback
Mark Quinn and freshman forward
Taras Panchishak. Quinn started the play in the middle third, found Panchishak making a run towards the middle who then slipped a pass to the left wing that allowed Hunt to put the finishing touches on a quality possession.
The 3-2 advantage was short-lived however, as sophomore midfielder Brendan McGee made it a 3-3 affair 11 minutes later. The Greyhounds earned a corner and served the ball towards the goalie box where Ohlsson was there to punch the ball away. McGee collected the ball and put away his second marker of the 2008 campaign.
Saint Rose generated four scoring opportunities in the overtime sessions but was unable to come up with the “golden goal”, allowing Assumption to remain unbeaten in NE-10 action.
The Golden Knights are scheduled to host Merrimack on the campus of UAlbany at 1:00 pm Saturday. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds will wrap up a three-game road trip on Saturday with a 1:00 pm league match at the University of New Haven.
