Box Score
PLEASANTVILLE, NY – A late spurt by The College of Saint Rose was not enough to overcome a hot
Northeast-10 Conference rival in Pace University this afternoon. The Setters (5-1/4-1 NE-10) led wire-to-wire, held the Golden Knights to 20.0 percent (3-for-15) shooting from the arc, and built a 19 point advantage in the early stages of the second period that proved to be insurmountable.
Freshman guard
Nicole Bini was in double-figures for the fifth time this season with a team-high 17 points for Saint Rose. Senior forward
Jessica Walton finished with eight points and nine rebounds while fellow senior forward
Maria Sanchez Gonzalez hauled in 12 boards, 10 from the defensive glass.
As for the Setters, senior forward Brittany Shields led a balanced attack with 12 points, 15 rebounds, four assists and three steals. Senior guard Jessica Scannell and sophomore forward Brianna Harris tossed in 13 points each, while senior guard Allison Cleary scored 12 points in 27 minutes off the bench.
Pace went into the locker room up 34-17 at the break by scoring seven unanswered points throughout the final 2:30 of the first half. Freshman forward Yuni Sher then opened the second half with a layup that gave the Setters their largest lead of the afternoon at 36-17.
It was still a 16 point ballgame, 52-36, with 5:19 remaining when Walton ignited the Golden Knights run by finishing inside. A pair of free throws from junior guard Brittany O'Shea and a Walton layup cut the deficit to 10, 52-42, with 2:07 remaining. Unfortunately, the Golden Knights were only able to get to within single digits with a mere 21 seconds remaining after sophomore guard
Gabie Polce canned a pair from the free throw line.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose returns home Wednesday to host conference rival Assumption at 5:30 pm. Meanwhile, Pace is on the road Tuesday with a 5:30 pm league date at Adelphi on Long Island.
